However, when a situation doesn't seem to be working as well as I'd hoped or imagined, I'll continue to keep at it, holding on to the belief that things will eventually improve. Even when there is evidence that my hopes will likely not be realized, it's hard to let go. I keep telling myself that I'll finally succeed once I figure out precisely what I need to do differently to make everything fall into place. I had a flash of insight as I woke up this morning that shifted my perspective completely. There comes a time when it isn't about doing things differently -- it's just time to do different things. There is a time to hang on, and a time to move on. My strength of conviction often keeps me stuck even after there is substantial evidence that a cherished vision is dying in the vine. It's as if my ideas are precious seedlings, and I want to protect and nurture them even though they are turning into kudzu and crowding out everything else. I think this is about my ego. And, it could also about safety -- and risk. I don't want to admit that I've been wrong, that my ideas are not inspiring or attractive, that my garden isn't flourishing. To let go would be to acknowledge failure. However, I cannot realize success unless I own what isn't working and release it. It's time to cut away the dried out stalks and stems and make space for other ideas to take root and grow. That song from the sixties (way back in the stone age!) comes to mind: "To everything, turn, turn, turn, there is a season....." What strength or important characteristic of yours could also be holding you back? Is it possible your ego is involved? How? What can you do to find a new direction?
