Sara and I have gotten to know each other pretty well since her mother's cancer treatments started, yet normally if I ask her for a hug, she just grins at me, shakes her curls and hurries on her way. Today, I was working on the computer and Sara kept coming in and out of my office. One time as she traipsed through, I spread my arms and asked, "Can I have a hug?" I really didn't expect her to agree, but this time she ran to me, climbed up in my lap and gave me a big long hug. She sat there with her head on my shoulder for almost 10 minutes. I could hardly believe it. My first instinct was to hug her for a normal length of time and set her down. Fortunately, I caught myself and realized what a precious moment this was. I put work out of my mind and just focused on the here and now with Sara. As I sat there with her little head on my shoulder, her arms around me, and inhaled that sweet little girl scent, I found myself praying for her. I prayed for the child she is now and the woman she'll someday become. I thanked my Heavenly Father that Sara has such a wonderful mother as my friend who will teach her by example to love the Lord. As Sara finally eased down from my lap and went along to play with the other children, I knew we'd come to a turning point in our relationship. We'd forged a bond. Relationships form and strengthen when we slow down and take time with another person. It's no different in our relationship with God. Perhaps that's why He said, "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). We have to set the world aside and be still. It's when we rest our head on His shoulders for a while that we get to know Him. We can't delegate our relationship with God. No one else can do it for us if we're "too busy." We can't throw money at it either. We don't have to do some huge grandiose thing or save the planet to gain His love. All He really wants us to do is slow down and get to know Him, and that means giving Him our time. It takes time to learn about God, to study His Word, to pray, and to gain a testimony of truth. None of those things take money, talent or resources. But they do take time to get off the treadmill and seek Him first. Once we have that bond forged, then we'll be in a better position to hear, recognize and act on His voice. Then we can do the "big" things (if we have desires to do them). But until we learn to recognize His voice, we're like a ship without a rudder wandering aimlessly at sea. Challenge Make a commitment to take some time each day to climb up in your Heavenly Father's lap. While you're there, set the cares of the world aside. Just be still and know that He is God.
