Basically, free photo images come in the following flavors: those that can be used freely, for any purpose whatsoever; those that are only available for personal use; those that can be used if you follow a specific rule stated by the owner of the image. Let's take a look at each kind of image site and the advantages and disadvantages of each. First off, the entirely free photo images. A few places online actually give free reign to anyone - allowing you unlimited use of any image. Regardless of personal use, commercial use -- regardless of how many downloads of the picture you share -- there are no restrictions. Secondly, some sites will allow you to use an image for your own personal use. Here's where it gets a little sticky. Define personal use. Sure, it makes sense to say that you can use the photo for your child's science project. But can you use the image on your blog if there's any advertising on it? Can you use it on a e-book you're giving away for free? I usually stay away from these sites, as the terms of use isn't as clear as I would like it to be. Thirdly - and many photo sites abide by this rule- their photos are free to use as long as you follow the specific desires of the artist/photographer. In some cases, a photographer may ask for a simple email describing the work in which his photo was used. In other situations, an artist may only allow the work to be used if a byline is included. Some photographers get more detailed, stating that an image is okay for personal use, but not commercial use. Typically, the owner of the graphic will be happy to know their work is out there in the public eye and appreciate an email from the user. Whatever you do, make sure you stay legal when you are using any free photo images. Sometimes free doesn't really mean "totally free", so check the site license or specific terms of use for that graphic. A little research goes a long way in protecting yourself and your products.
