"Build a better mousetrap and they will come." In theory that sounds great. Unfortunately in this day and age of constant and continual communication, if you don't aggressive promote who you are and what you offer, it's terribly likely you'll get lost amid all of your competition.

As I've discussed previously in other articles, the first step is to set up a website (or even just a webpage) that focuses on the problems that your prospects face. You want to make this page "sticky" by offering free information that will motivate visitors to tell you who they are. That's crucial since the sale of your products or services is likely to only be made after a number of follow up messages are sent. As common sense would dictate, it's rather hard to follow up with people if you don't know who they are. Not making your site sticky is one of the most common mistakes businesses make when they start to dabble in internet marketing.

Once you have your site set up the next step is to make sure that people can find it. There are a lot of strategies for getting visibility. Before you invest money on paid search, banner ads or other methods, you want to make sure you are taking advantage of all the free methods that are available to you.

To start, you need to first determine the key words or phrases people are most likely to put into Google when they are searching for the products or services you offer. Remember that when we talk about "getting on the first page of Google" what we're really referring to is getting on the first page of Google for certain key words. So the first step is to determine what the best words are for you.

There are a couple of resources you can use. If you have a Google Adwords account you can use the Keywords Tool feature to generate a long list of key words and key word phrases. It is a great tool and free to anyone who has a Google Adwords account. Another great free tool is Spacky which will generate a comprehensive list from which to select key words.

Your goal is to choose the top three key words and focus on getting on the first page of Google for those particular words. Once you've accomplished that goal you can expand your efforts to include additional keywords. It is important to keep in mind that keyword phrases "Marketing Coach Atlanta" will be easier to get highly ranked for than just Marketing Coach. Granted you won't get as much traffic with the longer key words, but you will get more targeted traffic. Those who research this issue conclude that when people are searching on the internet using a one-word key word, they are just browsing for information. When they search using multiple word key phrases, they tend to be actively seeking solutions to their problems. This latter group are the buyers that you want to attract.

Google uses a complex algorithm to determine how high you are listed. There is one factor to keep in mind, which many people overlook. Each page on your website has what are called Meta-Tags and Title-Tags associated with it. You can see what these are by going to any webpage and right clicking your mouse and then selecting "View Source". You'll notice at the very top of the code are the Title Tags and Meta Tags. Since the Google spiders that prowl the internet daily, rank your site by what appears first in the code for your site, you want to make sure that both your Title Tags and your Meta Tags contain your key words. However there's one other thing to keep in mind. You should limit the number of characters in each tag to less than 85. Thus each of these tags will most likely only contain your top two keywords or phrases. However, if you've done some investigating about what are the best keywords for you, this simple strategy will greatly assist you in getting ranked high on Google
