What is funny is that most of the people going to college really have no idea what they're doing, especially the first couple years that they are in school. They have what are called undeclared majors and wander the campus aimlessly using up mom and dad's finances for school or burning their own grant and loan money that they may have achieved. Sometimes there is a direction, especially with students that have a full ride scholarship. This may cause them to focus more knowing that their ability to play in college sports is dependent upon them doing well in class. This relationship between doing what they like and completing a college degree can sometimes work in their favor. For those of you that are less fortunate and have not received a free ride through school, you will probably have to apply for grants. There are many available through colleges and universities which are directly tied into federal funding. Most of them are very easy to get, but they can be difficult to obtain for the following reasons. First of all, if you do not need the money, you're not going to get it. The government will check on your finances and if you are young enough, your parents finances, and will determine that you don't need a few extra thousand dollars because of the amount of money that is currently coming your way. Second, if you are a single mother and you are working too many jobs, your finances might look too good for those that are providing money through federal programs like the Pell Grant. So here is a solution in case you would like to obtain a college education but are worried if you will qualify for scholarship or federal aid. When you apply, make sure that you clearly show that the amount of money that you make is virtually eliminated by the bills that you have every month. It takes a lot to raise a family. You have to pay for your rent, gas, food, children's clothes, and doctor appointments that are never inexpensive. If you have no insurance, it's even worse. So, if you're a single mom that once a free ride through college, have your financial information in order so that when you fill out documents for the college you went to attend and also the FAFSA which is mandatory for anyone that is going to school that wants to apply for federal aid, you will be able to present a case in writing using your current finances and you will probably be awarded the money for college.
