For immediate release Austin, Texas/3-24-09 -"Only 22% of high school graduates are college ready" according to a 2008 report by American College Training (ACT).

As startling as this is" says Raymond Gerson, professor of college success strategy courses for Austin Community college, "the numbers are even worse for minorities, low income and under served students."

"Many students entering community colleges" remarks professor Gerson "are required to take developmental and remedial reading, writing, and math courses because they are not college ready."

Gerson, who was a former job placement specialist and executive recruiter says, "Many of the skills needed to succeed in college are the same skills needed to be successful in the workforce. Most students lack these skills and this is tragic because being successful in college will be even more important now because of increased competition for jobs and more selective hiring managers."

"One solution" according to professor Gerson "is to teach students how to study and learn effectively. Learning how to learn skills can help close the achievement gap. Many colleges offer success strategy courses, but they are also needed in the high schools before students enter college."

Here are some of the skills Professor Gerson says are needed to succeed in college and in the work force: "Reading comprehension, problem solving, reasoning and critical thinking, writing, note-taking, time management, test taking, goal setting, knowing your best learning style, self-awareness, and learning how to learn."
