We all want our children to develop accelerated reading skills so they can enjoy higher levels of learning. Plus, skilled readers have an easier time learning overall. No wonder parents' number one academic concern revolves around improving their child's reading abilities. I attended a seminar by a reading specialist, and her comments about increasing a child's reading level honestly surprised me. The good thing is that the process is much simpler than you might think! How can I help my child reach "the next level" in reading? It's a simple process. Reading research shows that after a child has read approximately 35 books on his current reading level, he's ready for the next level. That's a cinch. Just read 35 books on your current level, and you're ready for the next! But how do you tell which reading level a child is on? This evaluation is vital in making sure the process works. Again, the method is easy. Simply have your child open a book to any page and read it aloud. If there are five or fewer words that she can't pronounce, then the book is fine for her. More than five unknown words, and the book is counted as too difficult. While reading books that are too difficult may appear the way to go, this actually does little to push your child to the next level. Not that your child can't enjoy a difficult book - but continually immersing a child in books that are too hard actually hinders the development of comprehension skills. Sure - it looks impressive to have five-year-old Jimmy thumbing through encyclopedias, but he's going to be a more successful reader if he's immersed in books on his current level. He'll move ahead quickly and will be enjoying those encyclopedias soon enough! You can further accelerate your child's reading abilities and improve reading comprehension by reading a book together each night that's just above the average reading level of children (one or two levels). Some of my favorite read-aloud books include the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, G. A. Henty books, Summer of the Monkeys, The Sign of the Beaver, Swiss Family Robinson and Heidi. For a detailed series of questions that help in improving reading comprehension on multiple levels, check the free resources section of homeschoolhelper.com. While our brains do process the skill of reading gradually, increasing reading comprehension doesn't have to be a laborious process. By helping your child choose books on his level, you can naturally increase his reading level and comprehension over time. (no worksheets necessary!) Enjoy the reading process together and watch your child's skills take off!
