At a recent Seeds of Compassion event in Seattle, a whole new slant was given on the term "compassionate business". Of course, you would expect that to be the case when His Holiness the Dalai Lama was in attendance. Rev. Kathy Hearn wrote in the August 2008 Science of Mind Magazine, "One speaker shared that the "new zeitgeist" or leading edge in business is authenticity, caring, and transparency". It would appear that compassion and business are now having a symbiotic relationship -- one in which compassion is not only desirable from a humanitarian standpoint, but in which it leads to being among the "most successful" businesses as it is practiced on both employees and customers. When the media reports the surprising number of large businesses that are falling prey to unethical and hurtful practices towards their trusting employees and customers, it's not surprising that we would begin gravitating towards those that we believe care about us -- not just their bottom line. So, when you're planning your business and creating a marketing strategy, don't overlook the most important aspect of all -- how you treat your customers and employees. Having a measurement that assures you are on the right track may help not only with your quality of life, but also with your bottom line. According to Rev. Hearn, His Holiness, who teaches "My religion is kindness", suggested that along with measuring the gross national product, countries evaluate their "gross national happiness index". This may be a good measurement for you and your business as well.
