Life Changing? Are You Really Ready?by Sandy Reed Send Feedback to Sandy Reed Career and life change supportMore Details about Career and life change support here.
After three weeks of small improvements, and more anti-inflammatory, over-the-counter pain medication than I care to take, I decided to see a chiropractor. After two weeks of adjustments, I'm happy to say that I am gradually improving each day -- when I don't overdo my daily exercise. The problem occurs when I decide to go dancing, one of my favorite pastimes. A couple of days ago I thought to myself, "Some things are worth taking the drugs and doing anyway . . . " At least it seemed that way, until the next day. I have learned two valuable lessons from this experience. 1. I really appreciate a healthy, pain free body that allows me to live my life as I please every day. 2. When you mask pain and discomfort with drugs that let you do things you shouldn't, you pay for it in all areas of your life. I'm sure the first lesson goes without saying for all of us. However, the second lesson might make you think about what else you're doing in your life before you should. Maybe you've decided to change careers, or partners, or where you live. Maybe you've decided to make this change because you feel your current life feels uncomfortable -- or worse, intolerable. If you haven't searched your internal wisdom to discover what the real underlying reason is behind your discomfort, you may make a change and find yourself right back in the same situation -- with a different form. So, the moral of this story is, take the time to know yourself and learn the truth about why you want to make a change before you take that final step. Questions you may want to ask yourself in the process of evaluating your desire to make a change are: 1. What's the real reason I feel compelled to do this? Example: Do you really want to move, or are you just avoiding an unpleasant situation with your neighbors? 2. When I get that strong urge to take action, what's driving me to make the change? Example: Are you searching for the missing peace and harmony in your home environment? 3. What do I hope to gain by making this change? Example: Are you thinking that there will never be conflict in a new neighborhood for you to deal with? 4. Is the gain worth the potential pain? Example: Moving is time consuming, expensive, and generally not fun. Are you willing to go through that process? 5. What will I have to give up? Example: There may be things about your current home you really enjoy, and would find hard to replace. Are you willing to give those up? 6. What will I do if I'm not happier after this change? Example: What if you move and find another problem in the new neighborhood. How will you handle it? Is it possible you can find peace and harmony internally, instead of looking for it externally? Above all, spend quiet time listening to your own answers to these and other questions that come up for you. You're the only one who is present at all times in your life. Your friends and family are well-meaning advisors, but at the end of the day, it's just you and your quiet, inner voice left to live your life. So, the real moral of this story is, always be grateful for, listen to and trust your feelings and your quiet, inner voice. There you will find the answers to all your questions, and the solutions to all your problems.
