I was taking a break the other day and decided to throw a line in the canal to do some fishing. Yes while it may be cool in parts of the country, it is quite pleasant here on the west coast of Florida. OK did not mean to rub it in . . .

Now I only mention this as I am an avid fisherman. If I am going for a particular type of fish, then that is usually what I will hook and catch.

Anyway, while I was goofing off fishing I began to think how much online marketing and fishing have in common. Yes there is a point to this madness!

When you go fishing, you need to use the right bait, target the area where a particular fish hangs out, whether grassy bottom, sand bottom, shallow or deep water. Once you hook a fish you need to reel it in to the boat to land your prize.

When marketing online, first you need a good ad, whether search engine marketing, email marketing or any other type of advertising. This is your bait to lure a perspective customer to your website. At the same time, you need to target your audience. After all you would not want to place a pay per click add under fresh water aquarium fish if you are selling golf clubs. You would need to target golfers via discussion forums for one.

One mistake made by many posters on the forums is they do not leave a creative link to their site. Now do not get me wrong, do not just make a post to advertise or you may end up getting band from the forum as well as a bad rep online. Rather, look through the posts where someone is looking for assistance. Answer their post only if you have useful and beneficial information. The reason I say this, over time by helping others, you will become the authority on the subject, one other's will look for in the future to have their questions answered. At the end of the post, most forums will allow you to leave a link to your site.

In order to lure your visitors and covert to sales you must have a clean, easy to follow website, which leads your customers to the checkout process on your site. Throwing a lot of pages out there with no ability to lead a customer from page one, to page two to the checkout, will lower your sales ratio dramatically. If you lead your customer, it's like a fisherman landing the fish in the boat!
