I was on the telephone the other evening, helping a friend out with her website. She has a few businesses. A sign business in Raleigh North Carolina, as well as a couple vacation rental properties. I offered her some good free marketing techniques that have worked not only for me, but other successful online marketers as well. Some of these you may have heard of already, however if not applied correctly, you can be wasting your time.

Reciprocal Links:

These are links that go both ways. You link to another website and in turn they place a link to your site. Now before you go and run out to get a free reciprocal link script, I must warn you; this will only be detrimental to your site.

Search engines look at links to your site in a very logical way. If you have links from other websites that have no traffic or are not relevant to your site, they can hurt your search engine listing in many of the larger search engines. What they are looking for are first, sites that link together that are relevant to one another. Secondly, the more active traffic generated at another site linking to your website, actually gives your website a larger score. Hence it is a value added link which can help boost your ranking rather than move you down in ranking.

Create a links page and link from your home page. Ask others if they will link to you with a short explanation of your website and inform them you will do the same for them.

Help Others with Their Questions:

Now this is one of my favorites, as it works like a charm if you apply it correctly. As with all of these money making strategies, they take a little time to apply, however are very effective. This strategy can bring fast results while at the same time making you an expert in your field. This is why I stress that you choose a service or product to make money with that you are familiar with. Search on Google for discussion forums pertaining to your industry.

Visit each and look to see if they have a good number of recent posts in the last few days. If they do, create a new folder in your favorites called Forums and place them in your bookmark folder. After you have found ten or twelve good forums, go back and visit each every day. Look for those in need of assistance and help them out. Make sure your response is a well written response that answers the person's question.

Most forum boards will allow a link back to your website as long as you are not SPAMMING the forum. Leave a link in your signature file at the end of the post.

Use Email Marketing -- Unlimited Follow-up Email:

You probably already heard that this is the best way to market and stay in touch with customers on specials . . .

I know, you here of this guy has 50,000 on his list and this one has so many on his or hers, however they all started with "0". Write Articles:

This one is twofold.

Here is another way to let others know of your expertise in your field. One way to figure out what to write about is by visiting the discussion forums I mentioned earlier. Find out what questions are being asked most frequently and base your articles off your answers. If a number of folks are asking similar questions on multiple discussion forums, imagine how many others have the same questions!

Then take the same articles and submit them to ezine publishers whose ezines are relevant to your article. All it takes is one or two mailings with someone with 100,00 subscribers or more . . . OK so I lied, this one is three-fold!

Now in your articles you leave a short BIO on yourself, including a link. The link you leave in an article database can be simply to your website. The one's submitted to the ezine publishers; you could do the same or link to a signup page for your newsletter. After all, these folks are already reading one and are interested in learning more on your topic!

Search Engine Submission:

Now as with many things in life, submitting to search engines will not get you listed immediately, however it will help to speed up the process if you have a new site. Submit to as many large search engines as you can. You will find a few listed below.

Start Your Own Blog:

This is a great way to bring traffic to your website. One thing to make clear up front, you need to keep updating once or twice a week with fresh relevant information for it to truly work.

Once you have an article or two posted on your Blog, list yourself on as many blog directories you can find. You can find a few listed below:

Now for why I stated to keep your blog updated . . . Search engines such as Yahoo and Google love fresh content. They like to spider sites that have fresh content more frequently. In fact I have sites they spider daily and every two days. Every time they spider your site, they are going to add the fresh content into their listings. So make a little time once or twice a week. This will give you time in between to think about what you will write.

Start Page Traffic Exchange:

Now I am no big fan as I have tried numerous ones over the years; however one that does work consistently and remains a leader in the industry is TrafficSwarm.

You can use to promote either direct sales or newsletter. The latter is more effective if you give a free give-a-way for getting potential customers to simply input their name and email address.

Now this program has been around for a number of years, yet it is still used by some of the top online marketers, and yes I still use it.

I am a Pro member only since I had been there a while and found it even more effective. Not only do I make a little in commissions, but I receive more points than a free member, hence more sales.

Last Drive Them to Your Site:

OK, so you ask how? Well all my newsletter subscribers came to my site to read this article. Notice I have advertising on the left, right and bottom . . . For every 100 visitors or so I make a sale. That is equivalent to a number of sales each and every day!
