So, you're thinking of commissioning or updating a market research website?

It pays to consider some of the functionality and features that could help you attract many more users and delight your client brands. Here are some questions to ask your website development company:

Is it easy for users to sign up?

Long, slow-loading sign-up pages with lots of irrelevant fields could see you lose out on huge amounts of new users.

Instead, work with your design company to choose only the most important information. They should be able to create seamless sign-up forms -- often as short as one-page.

Is the site secure and reliable?

You're handling personal data -- so not only is security important for reassuring your customers, it's a legal requirement. Make sure you're implementing secure logins -- and make the appropriate security certificates and badges clearly visible for all users.

Is it easy to navigate?

Market research websites can be some of the most complicated on the internet.

But, if your users can't easily navigate their way through the site, they'll abandon you. Web users are ruthless -- they have no time to waste on slow-loading or hard-to-navigate sites! Ask your developers about their approach to usability.

Can you easily add your own content?

Chances are, if you're operating on behalf of client companies, you're going to want to be able to add new surveys and questions frequently. But it's no use having to phone your web design company for every little change.

A powerful content management system should allow you to upload and amend content as needed. If in doubt, ask to see the CMS in action before hiring a developer.

Where does the data go?

It's no good collecting all of the data if it isn't then easily searchable and nicely categorised. Your developers should be able to create bespoke data management applications which sort the user data -- in any way that you require.

Is the incentive obvious?

Web users are tired, jaded sorts -- constantly bombarded with information and requests. So, you're going to need to offer incentives for completing surveys. Not only that, you're going to have to make it clear in the design.

Whether it's free gifts, voucher points or cash bonuses -- make it clear what's in it for the user, and make it easy for them to use their rewards (usually through a personal profile or "shopping cart" facility).

If your market research website can offer all of these features, combined with striking visuals, you'll lose less users and start gathering masses of valuable data.
