Over the years many have opted for store purchased fertilizer. What most people do not know is that these fertilizers actually strip away the nutrients from your soil, kill off beneficial organisms hence leaving you with a very poor soil quality. I like to refer to those selling non-organic fertilizers as the earth's pharmaceutical companies. They offer something to help with one problem in your garden but have a huge list of side effects should you use their product, some of which will make your garden more ill than it was originally :-) Alright, let's get down to the dirt -- no pun intended! Soil: For obtaining loads of flowers, vegetables, super lawns . . . your soil needs massive beneficial micro organism activity. Picture Grand Central Station around 5 pm on any given weekday! I personally use two techniques to enhance the soil. The first technique is the use of worm castings. Have you ever walked through the woods and noticed the fresh smell of soil or perhaps seen it the super black soil under some leaves? Worm casting or also known as "Black Gold" is what you smell and see. These are the remnants of organic matter broken down by living organisms and with the help of worms. I use these to transfer plants as well as spread around existing plants, shrubs, trees and garden plants. When it rains or you water, the nutrients are absorbed by the plants. The worm castings can remain active for weeks. To greater enhance your soil, the use of worm tea, or Organic Fertilizer on Steroids available from the Organic Worm Farm. The process utilizes worm castings brewed into a tea by aerating the brew for 24 hours or more. Molasses is added to wake up and explode the micro organism population. Using this to water your plants will not only enhance the plants but you will grow more and larger flowers and vegetables that even taste better . . . . Natural Organic Pesticides: Below are just a few techniques that I use within my garden areas. You can search online and find a plant or predator to organically reduce or eradicate just about every pest out there! Basil -the oils in basil plants repel flies and mosquitoes. Chives - repel Japanese beetles and carrot rust flies. Garlic - garlic repels aphids and also helps in deterring Japanese beetles, snails, root maggots, and carrot root fly. Sunflowers - draw in aphids so plant on the outskirts of your property or garden to lure them away from your garden plants. Birds -- different types for different likes! Birds are a natural predator of many pests. Different species eat different pests. Attract birds with bird baths, birdhouses and bird feeders. Bats -- of course many do not care for the idea of bats flying around; however they do a great job eating mosquitoes. One bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in just one hour! You can add lighting on the outskirts of your property to lure mosquitoes away from the living and garden area. As the mosquitoes will swarm along with other insects under the lights it will help lure bats. Remember, following a few simple steps can help the earth as well as assist in keeping you and your family safe by avoiding ingestion of chemicals most of us cannot even pronounce!
