Feature Articles: First, a stress-free environment allows greater facilitation of learning. No fear of failure increases your child's willingness to risk and try creative, unconventional methods to solve problems. We promote this environment by talking to our children about our expectations. For instance, create an atmosphere primed for learning by explaining to your child that part of the learning process -- really understanding and mastering a topic -- involves making mistakes. All human beings make mistakes, and wise ones learn from them! So there is no cause for worry if you try something and it doesn't work they way you thought; try something different. If you don't understand something or keep getting it wrong, take a break and do something fun. Tell yourself you'll try again later. Come back to the subject another time when you are feeling more refreshed. Second, make learning fun by using games, drama, movement, music and art. These creative activities encourage a love for learning. Why is this dedication to the arts so important? When you love something, you want to do it automatically on your own without coercion because you're curious. You know you have the tools to discover and explore by yourself. What a delight to the mother who has a plethora of household tasks awaiting! Your child will come to you for help when he needs it. Once he's got the idea and is using the taught skill in research, you will not have to stand over him watching every movement. Remember, when a person enjoys what he's doing, understanding and retention are high. There is no need to create tortuous learning conditions. Make learning easy and fun for your brain! Some of us recall writing our spelling words 25 times each, looking them up in the dictionary so we could write definitions we didn't understand, and using the entire unrelated spelling list to compose a story that was supposed to make sense. We also remember forgetting those words right after Friday's Spelling test! Why not use exciting games to learn math facts, spelling words, and important lists? The learning occurs faster, eliminating the need for costly workbooks full of drill and practice pages. Any way you can make learning fun - that's the way to go! The brain loves having fun and will cement that new learning rapidly. These simple brain-friendly strategies - stress reduction, a relaxed learning atmosphere, including the arts in the learning process, and placing an emphasis on fun - make a fine breeding ground for accelerated learning!
