To be effective, coaching requires breath and mindfulness. First, we must be in that blank place: calm, tuned in, ready to serve. We owe it to our clients to show up this way. Still, we're human. Our client's energy can affect our energy. A skillful coach has several ways to shift their own energy and to support their clients to a more centered space. The Invitation to Slow Down When I feel that warning in my solar plexus, I let my client finish talking and then say: "Let's stop for a moment. I noticed you're talking fast and your energy seems cranked up a bit. Would you like to slow down?" I use honoring and unassuming language: I noticed, seems, would you like. This encourages my client to set me straight if I'm not on target, and to be at choice. Grounding and Centering I encourage you to come up with a grounding/centering process that works for you and your clients. Use your voice to create a slow, warm atmosphere. Invite them to breathe. Breathe with them. Some coaches do a centering exercise at the beginning of every session. Of course, whatever you choose to do in your own practice, it should feel comfortable to you and be valuable to your clients. Just as slowing down your pace is valuable to preserving energy while still accomplishing your goals, so it is with coaching. From this place, the coaching will go further, deeper, be more masterful and satisfying.
