I'm definitely someone affected by the seasons. In the winter, I burrow in my office, work on my computer with my space heater and music blaring and try to forget that it's cold, dreary and lifeless outside my window. In my attempt to stay warm and alive, I disconnect from the outdoors and sink into a rut of workaholism. But then spring peeks her pastel head from behind the clouds. The sunlight shines, the ice melts and the thaw is always a bit painful as I feel the disruptive tug of the world outside my window. Being a creature of habit, my first instinct is to stay in the routine -- a workaholic rut. Then as the birds chirp and daffodils bloom, the earth's call escalates in volume, demanding that I break from my routine. Finally, I can resist no longer. I feel that if I don't get out of the house, I'm going to go crazy. Nature's siren call is too loud and too invigorating to spend another minute indoors. It's an odd feeling when I'm trapped between the darkness of winter and the light of spring. It's an unsettling, irritating, anxious sensation... as if there is a gigantic hole in my life that nothing can quite fill. I was feeling this way Saturday as I drove to an early morning meeting. I'd just about convinced myself that I needed a new friend... someone I could go places with and do things with... someone who would make me feel alive again. It's something I've learned about myself ... that most of the time when I'm unsettled, someone will come into my life and teach me the lesson I need next. And so I began to pray... send me this person... send me someone who can make me feel alive again. The next day, after a Sunday nap, I got that irresistible urge I'd had for several days to go outside for a walk and enjoy the warmth of nature. So, I set out for our children's playground, climbed into their fort and sat there for a couple hours with only the horses, whippoorwill, crickets, ducks and finally a hoot owl for companions. I pondered there, feeling God's gentle embrace as the breeze brushed past my body, kissed my cheek and gently stroked my hair. In those moments, came a realization that not only am I known and loved, but also I'm incredibly blessed with life and abundance. In the whisper of the wind, I came to understand that the "friend" I needed my Father in Heaven to send me wasn't a human being so much as it was His creations that are all around me -- the earth -- the land. I needed to commune with God through His creations. I needed to sink my hands deep into the earth and feel the life that only it can bring. The quiet sounds of the breeze, the chirping of birds were His call to freedom, His voice declaring that I am blessed with abundant life. I thought I needed a lively friend -- someone to go and do things with to remind me that I'm alive, but the friend I needed was here all around me, calling out to me and waking me from my winter slumber. My Father's world inquired, "Can Marnie come out and play?" The moment I said "yes," the uneasiness and irritation melted into peace. Once again, I am assured that God has placed around me everything I need if I only have eyes to recognize it. Isaiah 42:5-7: "Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house."
