Now that I'm, thankfully, self-employed I sometimes work even longer hours -- but not to impress others -- it's for me and my family and to maintain the blessed freedom I so love. For many years, being newly self-employed, we didn't take vacations, only long weekends occasionally. But that kind of hard work and dedication is not usually best for anyone in it for the long haul. Everyone needs to give themselves time off for rest and relaxation. A couple of years ago we bought a time share week in Palm Desert, California. (See that fabulous Palm Desert golf course above!) We took advantage of a free three-day getaway and fell in love with the area. Now we take 2 -- 3 weeks of time off every year, and come back rested and refreshed, and with a new perspective on our businesses. If you're a new business owner and feel that you can't take time off yet, here are three tips for you to survive without feeling like a workaholic. 1. Stop frequently throughout the day and take a rest and refresh break. Go for a walk in the middle of the day and empty your mind of all thoughts that have to do with work. Be fully present in your nature walk and let it rejuvenate your mind and spirit. 2. Take a 5 -- 20 minute rest after your lunch break. Sit back in your most comfortable chair, close your eyes and do nothing. Sit there until you feel the stress draining from your body. When you feel ready go back to work, you'll be amazed at what a difference this quick mid-day rest break can make in your attitude and ability to think clearly. 3. Get up from your desk at least once every hour and take a stretch break. Get your adrenaline pumping by doing arm circles, touch your toes, roll your shoulders backwards and forwards, or do desk Yoga. I have a wonderful CD-ROM of Yoga postures you can do at your desk. It's called 15 Minute Office Yoga. You can get this and other wonderful Yoga videos at this website http://bodywisdommedia.com/yoga_main.php . If you still feel like you can't take the time to give yourself a break, I'll leave you with this wonderful quote from C.J. Hayden's book Get Clients Now! ™ - "You are the biggest asset your business has. Taking care of yourself is taking care of business."
