Teens are Trickyby Cin M. Send Feedback to Cin M. Teens can be reachedMore Details about Teens can be reached here.
Let me back up...students today are facing more isssues than I ever could have imagined in my high school days. Most of them have basically raised themselves. Now, I'm not saying they are orphans, what I'm saying is they come from homes where, if they are extremely fortunate, have both parents in the home. But both mom and dad have full-time jobs and their own set of issues that keep them from listening, really LISTENING to their teen. I mean, come on...I'm a parent. I know how tired I am at the end of my day. I know the last thing I want to do is come home and listen to the woes of my children. I'm exhausted! I have laundry to do, dinner to make, a house to clean, a husband to pay attention to...if I want to keep this family in tact that is! Lest we forget the homework that needs help with and the soccer practice we need to get to.... But alas, I have chosen my profession with TEENS....so from eight am to three pm I dedicate myself to kids who, maybe, just maybe, see me as the only adult connection they really have...the one adult in his/ her life who might just give them the time of day... the time of day to listen to what they have to say. To validate their existence on this huge planet where most of us aren't really sure, even at thirty where we fit in...Oh...and did I mention this is my fourteenth year at this??? So, is my profession a picnic? Heck no. Does it exhaust me? Oh yes. Is it important? You better believe it. In my small corner of the world...if only for fifty five minutes a day...I do my best to make teens, my students, feel like they matter. Yes, to educate them. But I can never hope to get that far if at first I don't prove to them that I care. "How can I reach out to my teen", you may ask? Oh, I have plenty to say on that. But first and foremost, give them a moment of your time. Show them that you believe they have something valuable to say, and that what they say is significant. Listen, truly listen, to what they have to say. Then, and only then may you glimpse the opportunity to connect with your teen...if only for the moment. But in that moment you may learn more than you ever imagined...
Cin's a high school science teacher with 13+ years under her belt. A mom to three young boys, she loves the outdoors and all places tropical and actually believes that (most)teens can be tamed.
