Grants over time have not changed that much. The Pell Grant has been in existence for decades and has provided literally billions of dollars for millions of students across our nation so that they could attend school. This grant, however, pertains only to those that are earning an associate's degree and a baccalaureate degree. Higher degrees such as the masters program or obtaining a PhD are not able to utilize this money and for good reason. For instance, when you obtain an associate's degree, it is typically done at a community college where the amount of credits that you obtain while going to a four year institution such as a state college or university, it is usually limited to about $10,000 for the completion of this degree. Likewise, a bachelor's degree is also a several thousand dollar venture and when you have obtained both degrees, you're probably going to be out $30,000 depending upon the college that you attended. To achieve a masters degree or a PhD, you're going far beyond this amount of money. You are in essence forced to take out student loans which can be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to acquire this special piece of paper which gives you opportunities that are not usually afforded to the common person. Then a new college students or single moms, if you are just starting out, the Pell Grant is a wonderful place to begin. Right now several states are looking for new teachers to replace the baby boomers that will soon be retiring. This drive to find, train, and put into place teachers has led to the creation of the TEACH Grant and the Apple program which can help pay off any student loans that were taken out to achieve their teaching credentials. What it comes down to is that there is an urgency to train new people, especially in the areas of teaching, and therefore those that set themselves on this path will have access to grants that are not available to other students that may be seeking a profession in anthropology or biology. There are grants for these programs as well, but not as great as the need exists and therefore the funds are not as readily available. So if you are a single mom that is looking for a teaching profession, or perhaps you are looking for a way to improve your financial situation with a better career, applying for federal money through the current stimulus package is a great opportunity for you right now. Start the application process to begin your path toward a college degree today.
