He was a man known for his political background and impressive reformations; he was a leader in immigration reform, expanding health care, and civil rights for the handicapped. However, his social reforms are only half of his story - Kennedy was also an advocate for the environment and greatly impacted the United States' green policies. According to Treehugger, he revised policies for major oil companies. They had a provision called the oil depletion allowance, which had enabled oil producers to exclude 22 percent of their revenues from taxes. In addition, he established fuel economy standards, co-sponsoring the the first law monitoring standards; in 2007, he supported a law which increased their standards yet again. Senator Kennedy was strongly supportive of increasing energy efficiency to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. He supported the weatherization assistance program and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program that helps those in need reduce their energy bills by improving home energy efficiency. In 2001, Kennedy was a lead sponsor of the Brownfields Revitalization and Environmental Restoration Act that gave funds for assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites.
