Love Is the Beautiful, Black Woman

More Details about Love Is the Beautiful, Black Woman here.

Vernon Davis, Jr., has been writing poetry for more than three decades. Inspired by the late, great, Langston Hughes, he recently penned his first book of poems titled, "Love is the Beautiful, Black Woman." The author says this is his personal tribute to Black women. His sophomore book, "The Emosewa Woman," is scheduled for release in July, 2009.

Love Is The Beautiful, Black Woman is an up-close and personal account of the author's experiences - real and otherwise - with the Black woman. Davis, Jr., has worked tirelessly to cultivate and strengthen the attributes and contributions of the Black woman. His book reads at a refreshing, flowing, and insightful pace. I sat down with Vernon Davis, Jr. We discussed what motivates him, his passion for his craft, and of course his book, "Love is the Beautiful, Black Woman.

Fran Briggs: Thank you for joining me, Vernon.

Vernon Davis, Jr.: You're welcome Fran. I am so glad to be here.

FB: The pleasure is mine. Vernon, please share a little more about who you are and what you do.

VDJ: Well, I like to think I'm a very spiritual person. I try to, as I like to say, P.G.F.-- 'Put God First!' And, I do in everything. I believe my book being published is a blessing and a gift from God. I would love to say I write full-time; but that's not the case. I work for a consulting firm where most of our clients are realtors. However, my boss supports my dream of writing and allows me to use the internet throughout the day to promote my book. This is my main focus in my writing career right now.

FB: What kind of reception did you receive from your readers after writing Love Is the Beautiful, Black Woman?

VDJ: At first, the response was slow because I didn't know anything about promoting my book. I was very naive; I was just glad to be published! Then as time went by, I started receiving excellent comments about the title, Love Is the Beautiful Black Woman. People were writing and telling me they would buy the book just on the strength of the title. I received comments how inspirational and spiritual my poems were. I was also told that the poems were needed because they depicted Black women in a positvie light -- not at all how the media portray Black women. I started to hear and read, 'This book is a breath of fresh air ... Especially coming from a man.'

FB: Were there any responses that surprised you?

VDJ: Yes; one in particular. A reader from the U. K. called me, 'King.' I asked her why because, I don't see myself as a king. She said it was because of my style of writing, the way I responded to inquiries to my site, how I did my other interviews, how I view you wonderful women with respect, and how I carry myself as she sees it. I'm still a little embarrassed by being elevated like that because I strive only to be humble and loving to all, and without motive or lust. I still receive responses from people from all different ethnic backgrounds. All of them are positive. Now that's a surprise!

FB: Michele Obama, your book, and other events have created a unique position on how the Black woman is viewed. Can you expound on this?

VDJ: Well, first of all, Michelle Obama exudes and emanates elegance, greatness, inner and outer beauty, as well as intelligence, and many other positive spiritual qualities. I try to portray these attributes in my poems as inspiration for Black women everywhere. She is that kind of woman that inspires and motivates. The way Black women are viewed today is very enlightening. It's almost as if they have been rediscovered. I can only go by the comments I've gotten on my site (www.vernonJDavisJr.com). Surprisingly, most of the comments are from Caucasian readers. It's as though they want to know more or understand who we really are -- as if Black people haven't been around. And, especially who the Black woman really is. She is not the negative images, views, or stereotypical ideas that have been displayed in the past by the media.

FB: You're a poet and author, but you also partake in other activities; which areas do you invest most of your time, energy, and resources?

VDJ: I actually spend a lot of time on the internet promoting the poetry book and doing research for my screenplays. I go the library on the weekends when I'm not visiting my 15-year old son in California. And, I walk a lot to meditate and pray. It's not unusual for me to walk 4-5 miles on any given day.

FB: Vernon, as it pertains to your readers, what is your most significant growth opportunity right now? What about your international readers?

VDJ: The publication of my second book, The Emosewa Woman, is due in July of this year. In addition, I'm learning how to write screenplays not just for myself, but for any of my author-friends that may want their novels made into movies I'll be of service. My International readers? Wow; they're my biggest supporters. I started marketing & promoting my book to them first. I've had readers buy my book from the U.K., Germany, France, South Africa, Australia, and Nigeria.

FB: Vernon, many writers admit to doubting their ability to produce something that would actually be read by the masses. Was there ever a time when you questioned your ability to write?

VDJ: Yes; all the time! I'm always looking at my work and wondering if I can make it better. Will my message I'm trying to convey come across? Does it make sense? Why do I feel lost when I write? Sometimes, I feel like my words are trapped inside a box. That's why I always keep a thesaurus and dictionary near me for help when I'm writing.

FB: What advice would you give to the aspiring author?

VDJ: Of course, the obvious: Write as much as you can and write from the heart. Don't worry about grammar, you can always edit later. This way you get your story written and revision will save it. Now, there are three things in my opinion, that will help: 1) Read as much as you can about the craft of writing; as well as about what other authors went through to get where they are today. Look for similarities with your life.

2) Learn about the publishing industry. It's very easy to get published because of all the Print-on-Demand companies available such a Lulu, iUniverse, Author House, etc. Getting published today is a lot different than what it was 10-15 years ago.

3) Promote, promote, promote. Don't do what I did. In the beginning, I thought after my book got published it would sell automatically. And, I wondered why it didn't. Of course, now I know. I didn't tell anyone. I believe book promotion is the most important part of being an author. There are many books that are not so well-written, but sell well because they were promoted properly.

FB: In your opinion, what is the biggest concern for the American Black woman today?

VDJ: In my opinion, the biggest concern for the American Black woman today is acceptance of herself as an unique individual who is equal to everyone. Not someone else's conception of who she is. Not a man's, not society's, not music videos, not any outside source that tries to tell her who she is and how she should act. She can be whomever she wishes to be and reach any goal or dream she aspires. I feel the Black woman should see herself as a Queen. This is how I see her. She is great and unique!

FB: Most cultures hold Black women with children to low standards, and ther
