Walking & Hiking in Tenerifeby Frederick Habbe Send Feedback to Frederick Habbe walking and hiking in tenerifeMore Details about walking and hiking in tenerife here.
Guided walks. There are guided walks in many parts of the island which I can warmly recommend as the guides have a depth of knowledge about flora, fauna and the local people of Tenerife which one would normally miss if walking independently. The guides are often expats from Germany or Austria, multi-lingual and know the local terrain often as well as the locals. Popular guided tours are the Masca gorge which includes a boat pick-up at the end of the trek. Not for the faint-hearted as it goes down steeply for almost two hours. The Teno mountain range is popular with the guides and I would recommend doing a guided walk first to get a feel for these sometimes quite demanding routes before setting out on your own. Non-guided walks. It is quite easy to get lost in the rugged territory. But once you have gained some confidence and local knowledge, you can plan your own tours. I recommend to use spring-loaded Nordic walking sticks. Firstly, they make walking much safer and, secondly, they will considerably reduce the strain on your knees. Don't forget to take plenty of water if it is hot. You'll need it. Ideally, when looking for Holiday villas in Tenerife with walking in mind, look for places in the northwest. There are a lot of walking routes in this part of the island and you won't have to drive for miles each time. Here just some walks I can recommend, having done them myself: If you feel up to it you can walk up and down, but there are decent bus services on Tenerife and you are usually able to catch a bus back from where you started. It is all a matter of planning. Walking maps can be bought in Garachico. For accommodation, check out Tenerife Holiday Villas.
Frederick Habbe is first and foremost a businessman and has been for most of his life. Having bought a house on Tenerife a few years ago and spending considerable time on the island, he has become enchanted with the Tenerife culture, its historical treasures and its people. In his articles, Frederick writes about people and places off the the beaten track, far away from the mass tourism resorts.
