Despite the cost, however, you will be glad that modern practices revolving around wedding cakes are confined to feeding each other pieces of cake. Well, of course, some clowns will resort to splat-your-face-with-cake stunts but when you think of the traditions of olden days, you will be glad with just the cake on your face. Breaking the Bread In the olden days, brides were subjected to the breaking of the bread over their heads. The groom will gnaw off a piece of barley bread and then the rest will be broken over the bride's head, hence, showering her with sticky crumbs. The symbolism, of course, revolved around the groom's new dominance over his bride as well as the breaking of the bride's virginal state. Those ancestors of ours definitely had a way with symbolism! The wedding guests will then have to push and shove just to get a piece of bread crumb, which is believed to bring good luck. Yes, they didn't know about the 5-second rule then. And would you believe the commotion that could ruin your dress? Indeed, ignorance is bliss. With the popularity of wedding cakes, this tradition became impractical so another tradition took its place. Nowadays, you slice the cake, feed your new spouse with one bite each, and distribute the rest to the wedding guests, all without them scrambling like mad. Kissing Over the Pile In the days before wedding cakes, couples had to kiss over a pile of sweet buns stacked on top of each other as high as it can go. The belief was that accomplishing this physical feat meant more children for the couple even when the whole thing come tumbling down, with you and your spouse going for the ride. Now, that's an activity worth its salt over at America's Funniest Home Videos! Fortunately, the sheer height of multi-tiered wedding cakes has made this tradition obsolete. Can you just imagine yourself going up a ladder in your high heels, reaching over to kiss your groom on the other side and then, not surprisingly, ruining the whole cake, not to mention your dress, your hair and your makeup? Oh, yes, you can! Besides, who wants many children in these difficult times? And we are not just talking about finances but also of the Earth's depleting resources, of disturbing climate change and of deteriorating moral values. So, the next time you feel like complaining about expensive wedding cakes, think of just how lucky you are not to be subjected to the abovementioned displays of machismo and stunts of daring. And speaking of daring, you had better instruct your groom not to dunk your face into your bridal cake lest you end the marriage right then and there! And that would be the shortest marriage ever. But that's another story.
