Domain names are much the same as they make it easier to remember than the IP address they are associated with, i.e. 264.568.12.3. Which is easier to remember, the IP address above or OrderYourDomain.com? This is one reason, choosing a domain name is important. You want a name that reflects your business entity as well as easy to remember. Notice, OrderYourDomain.com states exactly what you will find when you go there, a website which allows you to register your domain name. When selecting your domain name, try to keep it as short as possible. Do not use hyphens as this becomes confusing to many. Try to avoid numbers, unless perhaps it is part of your business name, i.e. 1StopShopping.com. If you do use a number, try to register a duplicate domain spelled out, i.e. OneStopShopping.com. Some domain registrations services will give you free domain forwarding, allowing you to point the second domain to the first. This enables a visitor to enter either domain and be taken to the same website. Avoid domain names using the same letter to end a word and start the next as many people will forget the second time the letter is used and never find your website, i.e. DomainName.com When registering a domain name, be sure to use a reputable domain registration site. One problem many consumers find after they register a domain is that there is no way to receive fast, reliable support should they need it. Use a company that offers both a support ticket submission as well as live telephone support. Use a third party email to list as the Registrant, Administrator, Support and Billing contacts email address. i.e. MyName@Yahoo.com. Be sure to log in periodically to check your email as some free providers will terminate your email account if not logged into within 60-90 days or so. Do not use your internet provider given email address. i.e. MyName@ComCast.net. Should you move or change providers, you will no longer be able to make some changes to your domain name without paying a large hefty fee. ALWAYS, register the domain name yourself. DO NOT allow a webmaster or another person to register your domain name. As the founder of OrderYourDomain.com back in 1999 I have received numerous complaints instituted by a webmaster or other person registering a domain for their client. They register the domain, setting themselves up as the registrant and administrator for the said domain. When the owner who paid for the domain wants to make changes, they cannot because legally they are not the owner! When setting up name servers for your web hosting, again, do not grant access to your domain account to anyone. Either review the knowledge base, call or submit a ticket to the support team where you registered your domain name from. They will be more than happy to give you specific instructions on how to do this. One way to avoid modifying your name servers would be to register your domain using the registrars default name servers. You need not enter anything! Then select one of the domain registrars hosting plans and your name servers will usually be updated automatically or by selecting a button stating your intentions to use the registrars hosting and name servers. It's that simple. Usually you will want a .com domain as this is the dominant domain on the Internet today. As with anything, there are exceptions. For example, GoneFishing.net which I prefer as a net is used in fishing. Another reason perhaps to get a .net is to backup your .com if you do not wish for someone to try and play off your .com domain name. Perhaps you are offering some information on a subject; you may wish to use a .info domain extension. Another exception would be country specific domain extensions if you are outside the United States. If you do not know HTML or how to build a website, look for a domain registration service that offers some type of Web Site Builder. This is a point and click software enabling just about anyone, even with no website knowledge to create professionally looking websites in a matter of about an hour! This will give you freedom to make changes whenever you like without having to pay a webmaster each time or a monthly fee. Lastly, you can look for a domain name registration service offering a number of free add-ons. Many companies charge for the services that others will give you for free!
