Unfortunately the anonymity of the internet means that it is also easy for people who are less ethical than you or I to take advantage of those that aren't as savvy as you or I. So here are a couple of ways that we can help ourselves and others avoid these affiliate marketing scams. Avoid Get-Rich-Quick Promises; Affiliate marketing is a business. It is challenging. It does take hard work and it does take time. Anyone that tells you otherwise is just lying to you. Research Your Merchant (1); Google the name of the affiliate program and see what others think of their product or of the company. Research Your Merchant (2); Google the name of the affiliate program but this time add scam at the end. eg. 'get-rich-quick-scheme scam' Beware of having to spend your own money; With genuine affiliate programs you don't have to buy the product or opt in to anything. Only give as much personal information as is required. Commissions should be over 50 percent; Anything less is not worth your time. Check out the merchants webpage; They should have a professional, fully functional website that is free from glaringly obvious spelling and grammatical errors. It should have an affiliates area and full contact information for the merchant if the affiliate needs support. USE YOUR GUT; If anything seems off kilter, too good to be true, slightly dubious or ethically questionable. Then run a mile.
