1) Blessed Thistle -- Traditionally, the Blessed Thistle herb was generally used by nursing women, in order to increase the milk flow. This herb is now approved by Commission E of Germany, for treating indigestion and appetite loss. However, no clinical trials have been published on the use of blessed thistle as a herbal pill for breast enhancement, and hence its efficiency and safety for large doses or regular use is questionable. Blessed thistle may cause mild irritation to the lining of the digestive tract since it stimulates stomach acid production. Women suffering from ulcers, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal reflux disease and Crohn's disease, should not use blessed thistle. Since it may increase the risk of abortion and birth defects, pregnant women should not use it. Those allergic to chrysanthemum, ragweed or daisies, may also be allergic to blessed thistle as they all belong to the same plant family. 2) Dong Quai - A Chinese herb, called dong quai can also be used as an herbal pill for breast enhancement. It is primarily used to reduce menopausal cramps, treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and to regulate menstrual cycles. Only one study has been published on the use of dong quai as a breast enlargement pill. This was the case of a man who took a combination of herbal pills and suffered from a temporary breast enlargement. The study concluded that the pill had been contaminated with artificial estrogen. Under laboratory research, it has been found that dong quai stimulates breast cancer cell growth. Dong quai may also increase the skin sensitivity to sunlight, and hence sunscreen should always be used before sun exposure. Dong quai is dangerous to pregnant women also. Since it contains coumarins, a chemical that slows the clotting of blood, people using blood-thinning drugs must not use dong quai. Dong quai must not be taken two weeks before and after any surgery. 3) Fennel Seed - It is both a food and a medicine, and has been used to enhance libido, increase milk flow in nursing women and increase menstrual flow. No studies have been conducted on the use of fennel seed as an herbal pill for breast enhancement in humans. Due to the presence of dianethole and photoanethole, it was found that after consumption of fennel seed for a period of 10 days, breast tissue weight was increased in female rats. Upon usage of higher doses, the weight of the uterus increased, which showed that fennel, stimulates uterine tissue growth. The efficiency of the ciprofloxacin antibiotic (cipro) is decreased by fennel, and hence they should not be taken together. 4) Fenugreek -- Unsubstantiated claims are that harem women were fed fenugreek seeds in order to increase their breast size. However, no studies confirm the efficiency of fenugreek as a herbal pill for breast enhancement. Diosgenin, a compound found in fenugreek can be converted into estrogen and progesterone. However, this conversion does not occur naturally in human bodies. Allergy to peanuts and soybeans may indicate an allergy to fenugreek also. Use of fenugreek in large doses causes hypoglycemia and it should not be combined with medication for diabetes without the supervision of a doctor. 5) Hops - Hops contains the phtoestrogen, 8-prenylnaringenin which is 0.2 to 20% as potent as estradiol which is the main estrogen found in humans. Generally, hops is used as a sedative and is used to treat anxiety and insomnia. It can cause excessive drowsiness and hence it should be used with caution. People suffering from depression should not use hops. Hops may decrease the metabolism of drugs in the liver, which may lead to decrease in efficiency of drugs for fungal infections, allergies, cancer, oral contraceptives or high cholesterol. 6) Pueraria mirifica -- It contains compounds such as deoxymiroestrol and miroestrol, which have an effect similar to estrogen in the human body. It is also known as Kwao Krua and is mainly found in Burma and Thailand.
