Oktoberfest is Coming! Time to Learn German!
Satisfy Your Palate The numerous kinds of "wurst" (German sausages) are not far behind when you think of Oktoberfest. More than the usual frankfurter sausage, you'll enjoy the bockwurst (chicken, turkey, lamb, pork with parsley, chives, white pepper, paprika, and salt), knackwurst (beef or pork with fresh garlic), and the bratwurst (veal, beef, and/or pork). To avoid making a fool of yourself, study German in order to speak the German names of these delicious sausages. As the perfect accompaniment to beer, you must also try the numerous varieties of noodles, or spatzle. These noodles are made from basic ingredients such as salt, eggs, milk, flour, and different spices. You have to definitely sample the kasespatzle - cheese noodles with fried onions. These are so delicious that learning German, if only to show your appreciation, is a must. You will also have a taste of sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), hendl (roasted chicken), and Apfelpfannenkuchen (apple pancakes). If you believe learning German for these German delicacies is too much, think again when you get to the beers. It's All About the Beers and Wines With a myriad of wines and beers served in its 14 tents, it's no surprise that Oktoberfest is best known for the drinks. You'll be able to distinguish each one with a good knowledge of the language. With high carbon dioxide levels, the sekt is made fizzier than most sparkling wines. If you know your wines well, you can look for the Deutscher Sekt. Or, for that special occassion, look for sekt formulated from Pinot blanc grapes, Pinot gris, and Riesling. Brush up on your German to enjoy German wheat beer. The names hint at alcohol potency, so you can avoid confusing one from the other if you study German. Also, as the wheat gets darker, the alcohol levels also increases. Enjoy the unfiltered Hefeweizen and the traditional Kristallweizen (crystal wheat beer), Weizenstarkbier (strong wheat beer), and Dunkelweizen (dark wheat beer). There's also the specially-brewed Oktoberfestbier marzen (pale lager) that you just cannot pass up on. Yes, showing the many types of wines and beers is what the Oktoberfest is about. Why, there are approximately fifteen wines offered in the Weinzelt tent alone! Of course, to drink bacchanalian pleasures, eat good food, meet new people, and appreciate Oktoberfest, you need not learn German. Oktoberfest will once again be celebrated in Munich, Germany on September 20 thru October 5 this year. With the multitude of food and drinks available during this sixteen-day festival, it's a great idea to study German to be able to pronounce them.
