Have a Home Business? Keep It Moving. Overcome Procrastination.
Procrastination can lead to failure regarding building a home business. Success in a home business can be built by routinely handling daily priorities. I have heard it said that successful people do what unsuccessful people refuse to do or do not do often enough. If you tend to procrastinate, you probably know that it's not an issue of learning to better manage your time. There are internal components of your personality that keep you in the procrastination mode. Some professionals say it has to do with a fear of failure. Others say it's about rebelling against some authoritarian figure in your past by resisting the fulfillment of obligations. If either of these ring true for you, it would be valuable to see a counselor, or, at the very least, to educate yourself through reading about ways to overcome or resolve the origins of your procrastination. Digging deeper can help you eliminate procrastinating behaviors. And that can take a lot of time to achieve. So what can you do in the meantime so you can function in your home business? a. Make a list of things you have been procrastinating. Choose what appears to be the most urgent item. Give it just ten minutes -- then switch to a more pleasant task. b. Change your work environment so that it (1) is more user friendly; (2) feels more supportive and pleasant; (3) encourages working at home without distractions. c. Let your thoughts dwell on minimizing the difficulty of any tasks you postpone. Perhaps you can think back to a time when you did this or something like this before and it was not as bad as you imagined. d. If others are counting on you to succeed with your home business, remind yourself of this in many ways throughout each day. Resolve to do "a" above every day. e. Frequently remind yourself that procrastination has brought you nothing but bad feelings and other stressful consequences. You want to feel good again. It is time to be fully in charge of your life. From time to time, everyone will put off tending to unpleasant or labor-intensive tasks. Balancing the checkbook, cleaning the oven, and confronting the boss may be shoved forward on the calendar. Most people do this occasionally. A procrastinator does this frequently, especially amidst the pressures of working from home.
