Suddenly your child is transformed into a sulky and disobedient teenager whose only means of communication consists of grunts and door slamming. You're nearing the end of your tether - but rest assured, here is a teen expert who has the skills and knowledge to help you regain control.
Sarah Newton has years of experience working with teenagers, and is the expert for the popular ITV2 series "My Teen's a Nightmare - I'm Moving Out!". By following her advice you will see how the barriers can be broken down and a new level of understanding reached between you and your child. Try Sarah's methods out at home and see what a difference they can make to your family life.
This book supports you and helps you take a no-nonsense, no psychobabble approach to dealing with your teenagers in a way that empowers them, promotes understanding and ultimately puts you back in control of yourself, leading to a less stressful time with your teenage alien. 'Help! My Teenager is an Alien' is an indispensable guide for any parent who is at the end of their tether with their teenager, or has pre-teens and wants to be for-armed when the alien invasion takes place!
Now, I think that Facebook has many great things. Not only does it teach children to manage many relationships, (their brains are changing as a result), it also allows them to express how they feel and reach out for support. And if your child friends you (a whole other story) you really learn a lot about them. However, my biggest love at the moment is Farmville.. So, for those of you who are wondering what I am talking about . . . As the name suggests, Farmville is a game that gives users the ability to "Grow delicious fruits and vegetables and raise adorable animals" on their own virtual farms. With nearly 35m active monthly users and 12m active daily users, Farmville has just about grown itself into the most popular Facebook application ever. When Farmville surpasses 35,554,755 active monthly users, it will surpass the record set by the How Well Do You Know Me? application. So why do I think it is the bees knees? It teaches children so many skills . . . . . . .let's see 1. First I have to be neighbourly -- I need more neighbours to expand , the more I help others, the more money I earn and the more gifts I send the more I get. A great lesson in community, sharing and caring . . . 2. I have to budget -- say I want a tractor, I have to delay spending my coins and keep going until I get one, then along the way I also need to figure out if a tractor is a good return on investment or if expanding my farm is a better option. 3. I have to learn time management -- my crops will need harvesting in a certain amount of time or they will die, so I have to figure out where I will be at that time and plant accordingly. 4. I learn patience and commitment -- I cannot cheat at this game or stop; it is always going. I cannot make my crops grow any faster than they do and I cannot stay for the long haul -- well I can choose not to but my farm will wither and die and I will have been wasting my time. 5. But here I believe in the clincher -- I have to do maths and in the process, learn wealth-building techniques. Let me explain . . . OK, I want to expand my farm and to do that I need 50,000 coins. I have 20,000 presently, so what is the quickest way of doing that . . . .. Here are my options I can buy cotton which I buy for 75 and sell for 201 and it takes 3 days to grow I can buy Peppers which I can buy for 70 sell for 162 and take a day to grow I can buy Blueberries for 50 which I sell for 91 and take 4 hours to grow I can buy Rice which I buy for 45 and sell for 96 and take 12 hours to grow I have 100 plots and each time I plough them to re-plant it costs me 15 coins Just think of the complicated sum I need to do here . . . . . . Is that not algebra? I think this game is awesome and teaches children some amazing skills . . . so really, before you shout at them for their Facebook obsessions, think about it, it could be helping them. Meanwhile, I must go -- my blueberries need harvesting :-)
