Click here for more >> In the Indian Ocean, several hundred miles out to the east of Madagascar, you will find an island called Mauritius. If you view this island on a map it appears tiny. Don't underestimate it though -- it is by turns enchanting and relaxing. It offers you one of the most attractive landscapes on the planet, as well as plenty of locations to visit during your stay. If you like the idea of exploring the livelier northern reaches of Mauritius, make sure you head for Grand Bay. This has been constructed to appeal to all the needs and desires of the average holidaymaker. With bars, restaurants and shops all clamouring for your attention, you can spend a few happy hours wandering around at your own leisure. It's well worth heading to the capital Port Louis as well. It is located on the western side of the island, and boasts a harbour, the waterfront and plenty more in the way of attractions and sights as well. Be sure to visit the citadel while you are in town too. This was built in the 19th century and is also known by the name Fort Adelaide. It is not a particularly attractive building, but it is worth visiting simply for the great views it affords of Port Louis and the harbour itself. Of course you wouldn't come to somewhere like Mauritius if you didn't have a beach holiday firmly in mind and you won't be disappointed by what you find here either. Tamarin Bay is a good place to start. This is mainly because it does not afford you the kind of beach landscape you would expect from an island such as this. Instead you will see a rugged landscape that looks simply amazing and if you want somewhere that isn't lined with restaurants and bars, this beach certainly meets those requirements. If it is a more traditional, white sandy beach you want to lie on, try Belle Mare for size. This is located on the eastern side of the island, and when you discover that this beach is adored by local people, you know you are in a good place. You can spend all day relaxing on the sand and you shouldn't feel crowded either if you go during the week. The most popular one of all is the Blue Bay beach. Much further down the coast from Belle Mare but on the same side of the island, this rolls spectacular views, white sand and facilities all into one. No matter which beaches you visit or which parts of Mauritius you go to, all Mauritius holidays are holidays of a lifetime.
