Simplify Your Holidays,Stuffing is for TURKEYS! by Debbye Cannon Send Feedback to Debbye Cannon stress, holidays, ovwerwhelm, organizeMore Details about stress, holidays, ovwerwhelm, organize here.
It's kinda silly, but I couldn't resist the humorous connection between clutter and Turkey stuffing. So this article will help you take a quick overview of where you can "unstuff" and simplify your life before the holidays create even more chaos and clutter. Clean out your car. You are in your car daily so when it's a mess, you are adversely affected by that. Recently, I was seated by a professional story teller on a flight from LA to SLC. She'd had a collision earlier in the day and was recounting (in her true storytelling style) about her amazement to realize how much "Stuff" she had in her car when she had to empty it out to leave it for repair. She had her front seat apparently filled with all sorts of hand creams, manicure supplies and so forth. There was also a box filled with papers- probably mail and paperwork for her business. Then she told me about her musical instruments and books....the list kept going. So, what's in your car? Do you have a boatload of trash? I'm sure it was all left by your kids! How about clothes, shoes and random books? This week take 10 minutes to clean out your car and maybe even drive through your local car wash. What a refreshing feeling that is! While you are in the garage, take a look around...or can you even get your car in the garage? I am surprised to see how many vehicles are parked on the street in my neighborhood because people have their garages FILLED! Consider what you have in there. Have you used that stuff lately (or at all)? Do the contents even belong to you? Maybe you could ask that freeloading stuff storing friend to get their belongings out of your space. Is it time to give up the "I'll need this someday" and donate a few things to charity? Perhaps you just need to consolidate and reduce the amount of holiday decorations you have been keeping. I find fewer decorations make it much more enjoyable for me to get them out and use them. Don't forget to be in control of your calendar. Use your planner to full advantage by blocking out time for the activities you need to complete, not just the appointments. When you only write in appointments you may be overfilling your days and not having enough time to complete the everyday support such as shopping, laundry or office work. Try writing in more of the tasks you really have to do, not just the appointments. Could your health benefit by detoxifing the refrigerator and freezer? Before the holidays get fully underway, it's a great time to make room for those entertaining extras. Dump out that old bottle of salad dressing no one wants to eat. Clear out the "UFOs" (Unidentified Frozen Objects). You may even want to label some shelves so family members will know just where to look for leftovers or where to put the lunch meat. Before gift giving sets in, make some space in your closets and drawers. Chances are you only wear 20 percent of what's hanging in your closet or smushed in your drawers. Your kids may even be wearing less than that! Are you storing clothes that are outgrown or in disrepair? If so make some decisions about what needs to go. Send usable clothing to your favorite charity. If you are not able to wear pieces of your wardrobe think about why. Do you need a partner for that blouse? Do the shoes hurt your feet? Resolve these problems and make room in your closet and your life for the clothes that will serve you well through the holidays and into the New Year! Finally, the last place you may be feeling "STUFFED" is in your office files. Ugh! This is the best time of year to purge the paper. I set an annual date with myself to clear out the paperwork from the ending year and set up the system to control the paper in the New Year. You may want to get an early start on this now, or at least save a day in late December or early January so this task gets done. Review the paper you've been filing. It's taking your time or cash to pay someone to file it. Did you really need it? Could you have recovered the information elsewhere? Would the world have come to an end if you didn't have it? Probably not. When it comes to paper- LESS is BEST! Keep paperwork associated with family and business taxes. An awful lot of the other paper probably isn't really needed.
