Rural Holiday Villas in Tenerife

During recent years there has been a noticeable increase in demand for individual holidays, away from mass tourism package holidays. More and more discerning holidaymakers are looking for independent choices for both travel and choice of accommodation. More active holidays rather than the pool and beach culture are fuelling the rise in individual accommodation offers. Whilst this trend is certainly valid for most tourist destinations, the increase in demand for selfcatering holiday villas, cottages and apartments on the Canary island of Tenerife has been clearly noticeable.

Tenerife benefits from two distinctly different climate zones, the parched landscapes and hot summer temperatures of the South and the more moderate, green regions of the North. Both areas are separated by the 3718 m high Mount Teide. Especially those looking for activities such as hiking, walking and perhaps cycling, the North of Tenerife is by far more suitable. It offers a large choice of walks and hikes, from moderate to difficult in areas like the Anaga mountains and the Mercedes Rain Forest in the North East, the Corona Forest above the Orotava valley, the Teno mountains in the Northwest and, last but not least, the Cañadas National Park below the summit of Mount Teide.

To cater for the independent holiday makers, more and more privately owned villas, fincas (rural houses) and rural apartments have come onto the market for holiday lets in tenerife. Most of these are in the North of the island and advertised through specialised web portals. These sites can be found under keywords like, for example, "Tenerife holiday villas". Offerings range from rural cottages with basic standard to luxurious villas complete with pool and private entertainment areas. Many of the holiday accommodation can be found in the hilly regions in or near Canary villages and towns in the North.

For this more individual style of holidays a car is essential to get around although public bus transport is very good on the island - UK services pale in comparison - a car gets you just about anywhere, especially to the more remote starting points of the many walks.
