Different Styles of Pearl Necklaces

Pearls are one of the most timeless pieces of jewelry one can own. From your grandmother wearing her pearls on Sunday, or borrowing pearls to accessorize your wedding dress, pearls should be a part of every woman's wardrobe. A classic way to wear pearls is through a simple single strand pearl necklace.

Pearls used for pearl necklaces are usually of the spherical shape and are natural pearls. Cultural pearls are created within a mollusk but have been artificially implanted there by humans. The more natural and rounder the pearl, the more expensive. Pearls that are natural are usually sold by carat weight where pearls that are cultured are sold by their size, which is measured in millimeters.

When selecting the type of necklace you would like to purchase, consider the 6 styles it can come in and choose the appropriate one for your occasion. The 6 styles include the collar, choker, princess, matinee, opera and rope.

Collar pearl necklace (10 to 13 inches in length) and choker necklaces (16 to 18 inches) are a great addition to any formal or evening wear. Opera pearl necklaces (28 to 34 inches) are ideal for formal events, special occasions and parties. Princess necklaces (17 to 20 inches) are wore mostly for nights on the town. Matinee (20 to 24 inches) and rope (45 inches and longer) pearl necklaces are paired best with suits and business attire.

For a younger recipient of the necklace, baroque style pearls can better suit them as they are not the traditional single strand necklace. These pearls are as unique as the person they are being given too and often come in contemporary settings. For a single set pearl on a necklace, one may look into symmetrical pearls as they include the pear shaped pear and are ideal to use as a focal point of a necklace. For the traditional pearl necklace, a strand of spherical pearls is your best choice and is easiest to find at any jewelry store. Be sure to try your pearl necklace with different combinations to achieve the look that fits you best.
