Next to Christmas, Halloween is without a doubt the average child's holiday of choice. When else in the year is it permissible to delve a little too far into the dressing-up box and ruthlessly demand confectionary from your seniors? Handily coinciding with the half term break, many of the UK's leading theme parks have decided to pull out all of the stops in an attempt to rival the illustrious celebrations of our American friends. With so many Halloween ideas and family days out on offer up and down the country, you can safely mark the annual ‘trick or treating' trek down as a thing of the past.

For three weeks commencing Monday 12th October, Thorpe Park is transforming itself into a horrifying world of ‘twisted insanity'. Home to the world's first horror movie themed roller coaster (SAW: The Ride), Thorpe Park's ‘Fright Nights' let you ride the unholy trinity of Stealth, Colossus and the Nemesis Inferno, as well as explore their three heart-stopping live action mazes. Having escaped the clutches of some of the park's most wicked witches and gruesome ghouls in the ‘Se7en' and ‘Hellgate' mazes, head to ‘the Asylum' and meet the staff and patients, who aren't all as they may seem . . .

One of the UK's most frequently-visited theme parks, Alton Towers is challenging intrepid thrill-seekers to join them on their annual Scarefest- if they dare! Running from 17th October- 1st November inclusive, Alton Towers promises a series of hair-raising rides, mazes and ‘spooktacular' sights to bring even the most daring visitor out in the grizzliest of goosebumps. With sinister screams carrying in the wind and spooks and ghouls around every corner, the Park's stunning manor sets the scene for the fright of a lifetime. Having escaped the haunted mansion, head for the ‘Field of 1,000 screams' and negotiate your way home with the resident zombies. Don't stand too close, now . . .

For hair-raising half-term Hocus Pocus for all the family, head to Chessington World of Adventures. Try your luck at escaping the nightmare of ‘the Black Forest Haunt', before testing your nerve on some of the Park's exhilarating rides in pitch black. With a number of activities and amusements designed with junior visitors in mind, younger children can enjoy sweeties and scares with the best of them. With wicked witches, spooky spirits and a mythical Fiery Faun on hand to provide the entertainment, kids will watch on in sheer amazement as the magic of Halloween unfolds before their very eyes.

With a number of top theme parks holding their own celebrations to honour the tradition of All Hallows, this is the perfect opportunity for you to treat your little demons to a fantastic family day out. For a series of nail-biting days out for all ages, look to the UK's favourite theme parks to provide spine-tingling Halloween ideas and entertainment.
