There are many legally available substances such as alcohol and tobacco that are used recreationally. In fact, there are huge industries using both of those substances that have influence throughout modern culture. This article will look at attitudes towards traditional recreational drugs and will ask the question -- is cannabis any more harmful that other legal substances?
Tobacco has been used in modern culture for many years. Classic images of film and TV stars of the past are often seen with the celebrity clutching a cigarette. Indeed where would that classic idea of the tv detective be if the tobacco pipe was not formally a popular pastime? Its reach into the rest of society has been huge, major sporting events such as snooker was once inexorably linked to large tobacco brand names. Perhaps the tobacco industry's most famous association was with the world of motorsport. The livery's in some of history's most famous racing cars are adorned, and in some cases based, on the trade and brand names of famous tobacco and cigarette companies.
Alchohol has a similar past, though in many ways it is even more relevant to today's culture. Its reach into sponsorship of huge media events ensures that it has wrapped itself in a brand of glamour. Music events can have backing from individual drink brands that are owned by huge multinational corporations. Alcohol, in many ways, has managed to avoid being ostracised by much of society. It may have been linked to many injuries, and in some cases deaths, it seems that it could never become a banned substance. The advice has always been about moderating the amount people consume, avoid 'binging'.
Cannabis does not have such a rich social past, there are no large multinational corporations manufacturing and distributing it. It doesn't have exotic sponsorship deals of popular events. Some experts have voiced opposition to this separation of cannabis from other mainstream recreational substances. Experts have also said that they question some conventional thinking in terms of cannabis use and mental health issues. Others may ask if cannabis does not have a strong link to potential health issues (at least as strongly as existing drugs such as alcohol and cannabis) why not legalise it, tax its sale, and help generate more money for the economy. Some substances are legal though, for example Marijuana Seeds and White Widow Seeds are legal in some countries around the world.
