Memory Foam Mattresses: Choosing the Perfect One for You

With all the publicity that memory foam mattresses are getting, more and more people are eager to make the switch to this type of mattress. But is it is interesting to know that memory foam was originally created for NASA by Ames Research Center in 1976. In this article you will discover 3 things to consider before purchasing a new mattress...

This research center wanted to invent a product that will greatly reduce the pain and discomfort experienced by astronauts during lift-off. The foams that were available at that time were comfortable but produces incorrect pressure points when an astronauts shift to a different positions.

It was then that they discovered a visco-elastic foam that was a result of the process of combining polyurethane with other chemical elements. This kind of foam was temperature sensitive and easily conforms to a body shape as it reacts to heat. An indented part easily bounces back as soon as pressure from the body is released.

However, many people believed that this invention will not just be beneficial for the space adventurers but it can also benefit the public. So in 1991, a Swedish company decided to manufacture mattresses using this visco-elastic foam that was later called memory foam. Being an instant hit in Sweden, many Canadian and American foam manufacturers decided to follow suit.

Choosing the perfect memory foam mattress for you will depend on your preference. To help you make an informed decision, try to look at the different properties of memory foam:

1. Density

This property determines the pressure relief that your mattress can provide for you. The optimum density for good quality mattress is between 4 and 8. The higher the density, the better pressure relief it can give you. Anything less than 4 will make you feel like you're just sleeping on ordinary foam.

2. Firmness

The firmness of memory foam measured through its ILD Rating. It tells consumers how hard or how soft a memory foam mattress is. Ideal ILD Rating is between 10 and 16. If you buy a mattress with memory foam that has an ILD Rating outside this range, then don't expect to experience the kind of comfort that only memory foam can give.

3. Thickness

The ideal thickness for memory foam is between 3 and 5.5 inches. Don't be fooled by companies that sell 10 inches of mattress with only 2 inches of memory foam. Make sure that you get at least 3 inches of memory foam.

So, there you have it...

1. Density 2. Firmness 3. Thickness
