Although medication can help some people diagnosed with anxiety, medication will not get to the root of the problem. It also makes you psychologically dependent on the medication. Many people with anxiety and problems like hyperhydrosis or psoriasis, which can be triggered by anxiety, have found both relief and self-empowerment through hypnotherapy.
How It Works: Hypnotherapy sessions are not like the hypnosis acts seen on stage. A hypnotherapist cannot control your mind -- they can only give you helpful reminders. It ultimately is the patient who does the hard work. Some people prefer to go to a professional hypnotherapist while others prefer to use self-hypnosis CDs or tapes. Both are equally effective at overcoming anxiety.
What do you feel when an anxiety attack is coming? Perhaps your heart pounds or you feel breathless. Hypnotherapy will help your subconscious give you reminders that you are just having a panic attack and that nothing bad is actually happening to you. For example, when you are in a hypnotic state, the therapist may suggest you begin breathing deeply whenever your heart pounds. Breathing deeply can get more oxygen into your brain and help you perceive situations more accurately.
The Hypnotic State: Sometimes called the hypnotic trance, this is merely the state the brain is in when you are just about to fall asleep. This is when the subconscious can best remember suggestions. This is a state of deep relaxation. Some people prefer self-hypnosis CDs, tapes and MP3 downloads because they can use them at home, where they can more easily relax.
